We are delighted that the Ancient Society of College Youth (ASCY) have asked if they can ring St Mary’s bells on the morning of Friday 30th June. ASCY is a change ringing society, founded in 1637 and based in the City of London. The society played a leading role in the early development of change ringing and today it provides ringers for important events such as those at St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. These elite ringers plan to ring a method they have composed especially for us called Lymm Surprise Major. They will ring a full peal, which is a non-stop sequence of a minimum of 5,000 changes where each sequence is different and cannot be repeated, on seven or more bells. This takes around three hours to ring and is the bell ringers’ equivalent of a marathon, requiring concentration and stamina to complete. We hope all will enjoy the sound of the bells as they are out and about in Lymm between 9.30 and 12.30 on 30th.
If you would like to know more about change ringing you can go to : www.cccbr.org.uk or, better still, come up to see us in the tower on a Thursday evening.
